During the first five years of the Western Wisconsin
Challenge Cup, a Ryder-Cup style competition between 12-man teams from the
Chippewa Valley Golf Association and the Three Rivers Golf Association, the
results were a bit one-sided. The CVGA teams won each of the first five
Challenge Cups. But last year, the TRGA broke through and won the Cup for the
first time.
Saturday at Skyline Golf Club in Black River Falls, the CVGA got it back.
Led by home towner Greg Johnson, Eleva's Scott Semingson and Eau Claire's John
Holdsworth, the CVGA team trounced the TRGA team 15 1/2 to 8 1/2 to bring the
Challenge Cup back to the Chippewa Valley.
The CVGA's two-man teams won four of the six best-ball matches and claimed 3 1/2
points in the alternate-shot matches. CVGA players then came out on top in seven
of the 12 individual matches to re-capture the Cup.
Johnson, who was playing on his home course at Skyline, Holdsworth and Semingson
each went 3-0 in their matches on the day. Matt Horel of Osseo, who plays
college golf for Winona State, compiled a 2-0-1 record Saturday, while Greg
Murphy, Leif Carlson and Josh Fizel of Elk Mound each went 2-1.
Strangely, Brad Johnson, who leads the CVGA's season-long points race, came up
empty Saturday, losing all three of his matches.
The CVGA season reaches its climax pcnext weekend with the playing of the CVGA
Tournament of Champions Saturday and Sunday at Hillcrest Golf Course in Altoona.
