Matt Horel made a par on the first playoff hole to hold off John Holdsworth and win the Chippewa Valley Golf Association’s Mondovi Open Sunday at The Valley Golf Club in Mondovi.

Horel, of Osseo, and Holdsworth, of Eau Claire, both got around The Valley in even-par 72 Sunday, as did Steve Jensen of Eau Claire. But only Horel and Holdsworth were around at the end of the day to participate in a playoff. Both players missed the fairway on the par-4 1st hole, but both hit good recovery shots. Horel holed a short putt for his par, but Holdsworth missed his par putt to give Horel his third CVGA victory of the season.

Horel also won the Black River Falls Open and the Osseo Open earlier this season.

Jeremie Johnson of Eau Claire and Jared Naegli of Edina, Minn. both shot one-over par 73s to tie for fourth place. Eric Anderson of Altoona, David Blue of Edina, Steve Kessler of Neillsville and defending Mondovi Open champion Troy Shea of Altoona all carded two-over 74s to finish in a tie for sixth place. And Mark Sippel of Eau Claire came in with a three-over 75 to take 10th place.

Brad Johnson of Burnsville, Minn. solidified his grip on first place in the season-long CVGA points race by shooting 79 to place 18th and earn four points, upping his total to 134.

The CVGA winds up its regular-tournament season with the Princeton Valley Open next Sunday in Eau Claire. The CVGA Tournament of Champions will be played the weekend of Sept. 9-10 at Hillcrest Country Club in Altoona.
